Strategy
Nagasaki had been one of the largest sea ports in Japan and was important in that it was the location of the production of artillery, ships, military equipment, and other war materials. This mission took place on the morning of August 9, 1945. The U.S. B-29 Superfortress Bockscar was loaded with the "Fat Man" nuclear bomb that was to be dropped on Kokura and then followed up with Nagasaki as the secondary target. The crew that flew the B-29 was 393rd Squadron, with commander Major Charles W. Sweeney. The mission was supposed to be similar to the Hiroshima bombing. The bomb was dropped on Nagasaki under the orders of U.S. President Harry S. Truman. The bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been the only bombings with nuclear bombs to date.
